    US hits sixty nations with fresh trade duties replacing laws

    NEW YORK / Rank Wire.AI /- The US hits 60 countries with new duties as Donald Trump rebuilds tariff wall, implementing a sweeping set of import taxes that range between 10 percent and 12.5 percent. These latest levies officially took effect early Friday, seamlessly replacing a temporary global duty structure that expired on the exact same day. The administration initiated these wide ranging charges following a comprehensive federal investigation into the alleged failure of numerous trading partners to prevent forced labour within their global supply chains. The affected economies collectively represent approximately 99 percent of all goods imported into the American market, marking a massive shift in international commerce regulations. Washington has stated that this trade policy is fundamentally designed to protect domestic workers from unfair foreign competition stemming from unregulated and exploitative labor practices.

Nations that have adopted appropriate restrictions or committed to doing so, including Canada, Mexico, India, and the United Kingdom, are subject to a baseline 10 percent tariff. In contrast, dozens of other economies, such as China, Japan, and South Korea, will face the elevated 12.5 percent tax rate on their exports. The administration has granted specific exemptions for essential commodities, meaning that energy products, fertilizers, and certain foods will not be impacted by the new duties. Additionally, goods that are already subject to sector specific national security tariffs, such as steel and aluminum, remain exempt from these additional forced labour charges.

    This strategic trade deployment occurs just months after the Supreme Court struck down a broad set of executive tariffs in February, which had severely limited the administration’s ability to arbitrarily impose border taxes. Following that significant judicial defeat, the president utilized alternative emergency authorities to implement a temporary 10 percent global import tax. Because that interim measure was only legally valid for 150 days, the administration spent months developing a more legally resilient framework based on Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974,. Legal analysts consider this statutory foundation far more resistant to domestic court challenges than the previous emergency declarations. The timing of this week’s announcement ensured there would be absolutely no interruption in the collection of heightened border taxes at ports of entry.

    Implementation of Sweeping New Border Tax Policies

    The architect of this redesigned trade policy, United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, emphasized that the federal government has strictly enforced an import ban on goods produced by forced labour for nearly a century. Greer publicly declared that it is well past time for international trading partners to adopt and enforce equivalent standards.     The international response to the newly imposed tariffs varied significantly among major trading blocs and adversarial nations. A spokesperson for the European Commission indicated that the updated tariff structure aligns closely with bilateral agreements reached between the European Union and Washington last year. However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Beijing issued a strong condemnation of the policy. Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian explicitly warned that trade conflicts serve the interests of no party and stated that his government opposes all forms of unilateral tariff measures. Despite the harsh rhetorical pushback from the highest levels of the Chinese government, Beijing has not yet formally announced any specific retaliatory actions directed against American agricultural exports or manufactured goods.

    Key allied nations in the Asia Pacific region similarly voiced deep frustrations regarding the immediate economic consequences of the American trade pivot. In Tokyo, Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara publicly characterized the imposition of fresh import duties on Japanese manufacturers as highly regrettable, adding that his government is seeking urgent clarification from Washington. Australian Trade Minister Don Farrell forcefully argued that his country already maintains some of the strongest anti slavery frameworks globally, declaring the new 12.5 percent tax completely unjustified and inconsistent with existing free trade agreements. Additionally, Singaporean Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan criticized the lack of technical or economic justification for penalizing an economy that does not suffer from systemic forced labour issues.

    Trade policy organizations continue to scrutinize the foundational evidence utilized by the federal government to justify this sweeping economic restructuring. The Global Trade Research Initiative, an independent think tank based in India, released a statement asserting that Washington has produced absolutely no credible evidence showing that Indian industries export products manufactured using coerced labour. Representatives from New Zealand echoed this sentiment, with Trade Minister Todd McClay labeling the investigation a mere legal pretext designed to shield American industries from legitimate foreign competition. As the new regulations take immediate effect, the administration is processing thousands of formal requests from domestic corporations seeking specific product exemptions.
