Grand Teton Takes Action Against Bear Due to Persistent Human Approaches

WYOMING / RankWire.AI / – A black bear near Delta Lake in Grand Teton National Park was euthanized by wildlife officials after repeatedly approaching visitors. Rangers reported that the bear had accessed human food and was increasingly getting close to people. Moreover, it became more difficult for staff to deter the bear as these encounters continued. The decision was made that the pattern posed a safety threat, leading to the bear being tranquilized and euthanized in the backcountry on Sept. 11.

Grand Teton removes bear after repeated visitor approaches
Bear safety remains a priority at Grand Teton after a food-conditioned black bear was removed.

Earlier in 2026, park personnel received reports about a black bear approaching visitors around the popular Delta Lake area. Initially, officials lacked sufficient evidence to confirm that the bear had become conditioned to human food. That changed once the bear received several food rewards and kept moving toward people. Wildlife teams observed its conduct and attempted hazing strategies to drive the animal away from hiking zones.

Images released after the incident depicted visitors only a few feet from the bear. Other pictures showed the animal inspecting food, packs, and unattended belongings scattered among rocks and trees. Officials advised visitors to immediately secure their food and gear when a bear enters the vicinity. They also cautioned against allowing bears access to human food under any circumstances. The carcass was removed from the remote site via air the following morning by wildlife personnel.

Feeding bears can alter their behavior patterns

The National Park Service explains that bears can quickly learn to associate humans with easy access to food. Such behavior often results in increased encounters along trails, near campsites, and at other popular recreation spots. In this particular case, managers cited repeated food rewards, close approaches, and unsuccessful hazing attempts as reasons for their decision. Officials emphasized that these factors indicated the animal posed a significant safety risk. The decision to euthanize was made after considering all available management options.

While relocation can be part of bear management strategies, authorities note it does not always eliminate food-conditioned behaviors. Bears might return to familiar areas or clash with other wildlife following a move. Additionally, suitable habitats with natural food sources and minimal human activity are essential for success. For the Delta Lake bear, staff concluded that all other practical options had been exhausted. The park describes lethal removal as a last resort when a bear continues to threaten public safety.

Advisories emphasize adherence to bear safety guidelines

Grand Teton National Park continues to alert visitors that black bears and grizzlies are active throughout the area. Staying at least 100 yards away from bears and avoiding taking photos of them are strongly recommended. Hikers venturing into the backcountry should travel in groups, make noise, and carry bear spray within easy reach. Securing all food and scented items when not in use is also essential. These practices are key to preventing bears from acquiring food rewards and becoming accustomed to human presence.

According to the National Park Service, managers typically remove about one or two bears annually in the park after other methods have failed. Most of these animals are black bears, based on park guidance. Authorities state that lethal removal is employed only when a bear clearly poses a human safety threat and other options have proved ineffective. The incident at Delta Lake highlights the importance of proper food storage and maintaining distance to reduce conflicts. Park officials continue to encourage visitors to report bear encounters and adhere to established wildlife regulations.
