Court in New Mexico mandates Meta to allocate $567 million for youth mental health initiatives based on legal ruling

SANTA FE, Mexico / RankWire.AI / – After a three-week bench trial, a judge from New Mexico ordered Meta to contribute $567 million toward creating a youth mental health abatement fund. In Santa Fe, Judge Bryan Biedscheid determined that Facebook and Instagram constituted a public nuisance by intensifying a mental health crisis among teenagers and neglecting to shield children from online dangers. The awarded funds will mainly be directed toward clinical treatment programs and child safety projects throughout the state.

This latest financial mandate follows a separate $375 million jury verdict issued against Meta in March 2026 during the initial phase of the state’s legal proceedings. Earlier, jurors found that Meta had breached New Mexico consumer protection laws by falsely representing product safety features for younger users. Combining both rulings, Meta faces a total liability of $942 million from the state’s enforcement action led by New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez, with the $567 million allocated to teen mental health funds.

The court’s comprehensive remedial order specifies that $420 million of the new funds will directly finance clinical mental health treatments for children across New Mexico. The rest of the judgment will be used to support public education campaigns, early screening efforts, and community prevention programs over the next five years. Additionally, the court has imposed strict operational directives requiring Meta to enforce default private settings for accounts of users under 18, limit daily engagement time, restrict notification alerts, and enhance screening mechanisms for child sexual abuse material.

Meta Ordered to Contribute $567 Million in New Mexico for Youth Mental Health Support

The enforcement action in Mexico marks one of the most significant financial penalties imposed on a major tech firm regarding child safety standards. Attorney General Torrez initiated the lawsuit after investigations revealed that algorithmic recommendation systems systematically exposed minor accounts to predatory contact and explicit content. Although the court mandated significant product modifications, Judge Biedscheid chose not to require mandatory identity verification for users under 13, citing federal privacy protections under the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act.

Following the ruling, Meta representatives confirmed that the company intends to appeal the decision to higher state courts. In an official statement, Meta asserted that it has invested heavily in developing age-appropriate features, parent supervision tools, and automated content moderation across its platforms. Company officials argued that the ruling misrepresents the platform’s architecture and overlooks the internal engineering efforts aimed at removing harmful content and identifying malicious actors.

This legal decision emerges amidst broader judicial pressures faced by social media companies across federal and state courts in the United States. Over 40 state attorneys general, along with numerous local school districts, have launched parallel lawsuits claiming that platform design choices promote compulsive usage among teenagers. The New Mexico ruling sets a significant legal precedent as additional states proceed with trials in federal courts later this year.

As Meta prepares to challenge the $567 million obligation in appellate courts, state lawmakers are reviewing how to allocate the proceeds from the trial. Officials in New Mexico have indicated that the funds will prioritize expanding healthcare access in rural areas, supporting behavioral health counseling, and establishing school-based health centers. The structural remedies mandated by Thursday’s court order are expected to remain in effect for five years, pending the outcome of Meta’s appeal.
