MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – Google will limit the available Gemini model selections for free personal accounts starting October 9, 2026. Users without a Google AI subscription will be able to access Flash-Lite via Gemini Apps. However, they will no longer have access to Flash or Pro under the new policy. The company explained these modifications in its updated support documentation for its consumer AI service. These regulations pertain specifically to personal Google accounts, not accounts managed by workplaces or educational institutions.

Customers subscribed to Google AI Plus will retain access to Flash-Lite and Flash after the changes are implemented on their accounts. Nonetheless, their subscription will no longer include Pro. Google has not specified a single transition date for all AI Plus users. The firm states that impacted customers will receive an email indicating when their access will be altered. Subscribers to AI Pro and AI Ultra will continue to enjoy access to Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro.
Flash-Lite is intended as an optimized Gemini model for quick responses and routine tasks. Meanwhile, Flash offers enhanced functionality while still delivering faster replies across various query types. Pro is aimed at more complex workloads, such as advanced mathematics, programming, and detailed analysis. Google notes that this model can handle text, files, images, and videos while engaging in more in-depth reasoning. Responses from Pro may also take longer to generate compared to other Gemini models.
Paid Gemini subscriptions maintain broader model access
Furthermore, Google is rolling out effort settings categorized as low, medium, and high for models within a user’s plan. Increasing effort enables a model to dedicate more resources toward producing comprehensive responses, which also consumes more of that account’s usage quota. Customers with AI Pro and AI Ultra subscriptions will gain access to Deep Think for complex reasoning tasks. Google describes Deep Think as a feature that applies maximum parallel reasoning to handle sophisticated requests.
These new restrictions follow previous adjustments to how Gemini Apps calculate usage. On May 17, 2026, Google introduced compute-based limits, with allowances resetting every five hours until weekly limits are met. The calculation factors in prompt complexity, features utilized, and conversation length. Advanced tools and premium models can consume these allowances more rapidly than basic ones. Additionally, Google extended these usage limit rules to users under 18 on July 24.
Different usage caps for Google AI subscription tiers
Users without a Google AI subscription are subject to the service’s standard usage limits. AI Plus offers double the normal allowance, whereas AI Pro boosts that to four times. AI Ultra provides either five times or twenty times the AI Pro limit, depending on the plan. Features like Deep Research, media creation, Pro, extended thinking, and Deep Think can use larger portions of these quotas. Consequently, paid plans not only deliver greater model accessibility but also higher usage capacities.
Starting October 9, these changes will impact Gemini Apps used via personal Google accounts, but they will not affect all Google AI offerings. Work and school accounts are governed by separate access policies, and developer services follow their own rules. Users can modify, upgrade, or cancel Google AI plans through Gemini Apps and Google One. From that date, free personal account users will rely on Flash-Lite instead of Flash or Pro. Google also advises keeping the Gemini mobile app updated to ensure smooth transition as the new access structure becomes active.
